Trauma

Trauma is defined by both the event and the aftermath of the event. Characteristics of an event that make it traumatic include:

outside own norm,
outside individual control,
unpredictable,
potential of physical harm or even death.

Trauma can be experienced as a one-of event, such as an assault or an accident, or the trauma can be chronic, such as childhood abuse, war or domestic violence. Traumatic events in people's lives overwhelm the ordinary methods of self care that allow all of us to feel in control and safe. Trauma can take away our sense of self and our connections to other people and the world.
Responses to trauma can include:

feelings of numbness or emptiness,
feelings of shame, guilt and self-blame,
a sense of being different to everyone else,
isolation and withdrawal,
difficulties in establishing or maintaining intimate relationships,
sleep disturbances,
difficulty or an inability to calm self,
reliving the trauma in thoughts and images,
nightmares,
sense of hopelessness and despair,
difficulty or inability to engage in life with energy and pleasure.

We can provide advice and assistance on exposure to trauma and its likely after effects. Our clinical work will place an emphasis on identifying risk factors and promoting resilience and effective recovery. Our staff has a depth of experience in the areas of assessment, prevention and treatment of trauma as well as for general mental health and relational problems.
