Depression

It can happen to anyone at any time. It can be a problem at any stage in life - childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. There are many false and hurtful beliefs about depression, including,

the person with depression can or should be able to just "pull themselves out of it"
the person with depression is weak minded or mentally incompetent,
the person with depression is being punished for some past transgression.

Depression is not a sign of weak will, mental incompetence, badness, divine retribution, or a character flaw. Sometimes there may be an apparently easily identifiable reason for the depression, often associated with loss and grief. Other times there is no obvious cause for the depression. Either way the pain is real and it can be difficult to access appropriate help. Some of the mood and thought changes that are part of depression include:

hopelessness and helplessness,
loss of confidence,
variations in mood between the morning and the evening,
low self-esteem,
negative self image,
life can seem meaningless and boring,
feelings of guilt,
suicidal ideas or plans,
anxiety,
feelings of emptiness,
feelings of unreality.

Behavioural indicators of depression include:

drug and alcohol misuse,
worrying,
panic attacks,
restlessness,
phobias or obsessions,
slowing and reduced body movement

Physical indicators of depression include:

loss of energy/exhaustion,
loss of interest in sex,
disturbances in sleep,
poor concentration,
weight loss or gain,
tension pains,
headaches,
crying

If you are feeling depressed and having any thoughts of ending your life seek help immediately.
